Grand Baie sits in the most sheltered corner of Mauritius, which is why it can be raining on the plateau and perfectly dry here. If you have seen a gloomy island forecast and are worried about your trip, this is the page that explains why it may not apply to you.
Grand Baie weather is not the same as Mauritius weather, and the difference is large enough to change a holiday. The town sits on the north west coast, in the lee of the central plateau and away from the south east trade winds that hit the other side of the island. That geography makes it the driest, calmest and most reliably sunny resort area in the country.
We drive to Grand Baie several times a day, from an airport that is an hour and ten minutes away on the far side of the island. The number of times we have set off in rain and arrived in sunshine is the single clearest illustration of what a small island with a mountain range in the middle does to a forecast.

Three geographic facts explain almost everything about Grand Baie weather.
The trade winds come from the south east. They hit the east coast first, rise over the central plateau, drop their rain there, and arrive in the north west much drier and much weaker. Belle Mare on the east coast can be uncomfortably windy on a day when Grand Baie is still.
The plateau is the rain trap. Curepipe, in the centre and about 550 metres up, is one of the wettest inhabited places on the island. Grand Baie, at sea level on the far side, is one of the driest. A national forecast averages those two and describes neither.
The bay faces north. It is protected from the prevailing swell, which is why it works as a harbour and why the water inside it stays flat when the open coasts are choppy.
The practical consequence: if you look at a Mauritius forecast showing rain and you are staying in Grand Baie, check a Grand Baie forecast before you cancel anything. Very often the rain is happening thirty kilometres away and 500 metres up.
An island wide Mauritius forecast is close to useless for planning a day in Grand Baie. The north west is consistently drier, sunnier and less windy than the island average, and the gap is widest in exactly the months people worry about. Look up the town, not the country.

Hot, humid, green and the warmest the sea gets all year. Grand Baie weather in these months means daytime air in the high twenties and water that passes 27 degrees, which is the point at which you stop noticing you are in it.
Rain arrives as short, heavy afternoon bursts rather than grey all day drizzle. A shower lasts twenty minutes and the pavement is dry an hour later. This is also when the island is at its greenest and when mangoes and lychees fill the market stalls for almost nothing.
The trade off is humidity. February afternoons are genuinely sticky, and anything involving walking is a morning activity. February is also the wettest month island wide, and the one where the gap between a Mauritius forecast and actual Grand Baie weather is at its most misleading in your favour.
This is the busiest and most expensive stretch, particularly the last fortnight of December.
This is where Grand Baie earns its reputation. Across the island these are the windy months, with the south east trades blowing hard onto the east and south coasts from June through August. In the sheltered north west they are dry, bright, comfortable and often glassy.
Days run in the low to mid twenties, nights drop to around eighteen and the humidity disappears entirely. Skies are clearer than at any other time of year, which is why the light in these months is the best you will get for photographs.
The trade off is the water. The sea bottoms out just under 24 degrees in September, which is swimmable but noticeably cool for the first minute. If your holiday is built around long spells in the lagoon rather than around the town, restaurants and boat trips, that matters.
These are also the quietest and cheapest months, outside the July and August school holiday peak.

Our honest pick is October, closely followed by April. Both give you warm water, dry days, comfortable humidity and a town that is busy enough to be fun and not so busy that you cannot get a table. Our best time to visit Mauritius guide covers the same question for the whole island.
Sea temperature is the figure that decides most holidays and almost nobody publishes it.
The water off Grand Baie ranges from about 23.7 degrees in September to about 28.3 degrees in March. Both ends are swimmable. The difference between them is the difference between getting in without thinking and taking a moment first.
The bay itself is a working harbour full of boats, so the swimming beach for Grand Baie is La Cuvette at the northern end, a small sheltered crescent with sand and calm shallow water. For a proper beach day, Pereybere is five minutes north and Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches are ten minutes south, all of them on the same sheltered coast with the same weather. Because the north west is protected, the lagoon here is calm on days when the east coast is unusable. That is the practical value of Grand Baie weather: not that it never rains, but that the water is almost always swimmable.

The pattern worth noticing: everything that leaves the shelter of the bay is weather dependent, and everything inside it is not. In the windier months from June to August, boat trips to the northern islands are cancelled more often than at any other time of year, so build in a spare day if that trip is the reason you came.
The official cyclone season runs from November to April, peaking in January and February. Most systems that form in the south west Indian Ocean pass well clear of Mauritius, and a direct hit is rarer than the word suggests.
Grand Baie is not more exposed than anywhere else on the island, and being on the sheltered coast helps with ordinary weather rather than with a cyclone, which affects everywhere at once.
The country runs a graded warning system, Class 1 to Class 4, broadcast on national radio and carried by every hotel. Class 3 means everything shuts: shops, restaurants, the airport and every taxi including ours. Warnings come from the Mauritius Meteorological Services, which is the authority to follow rather than a foreign weather app.
Practically: take travel insurance covering weather disruption if you are coming between December and March, and leave a day of slack before an onward flight.
Grand Baie is the furthest major resort area from the airport, at about an hour and ten minutes in normal traffic. That is the one real cost of staying in the driest corner of the island.
The drive crosses the whole island, through or around Port Louis, and in the rush hour it can stretch by twenty to thirty minutes. In the heavy rain months of January to March, add more again: the coast road slows noticeably and the Port Louis approach backs up.
Buses run to Grand Baie from Port Louis and along the north coast and are cheap and straightforward, but they stop in the early evening and do not run from the airport in any useful way after a late flight.

Warmer and drier than the island average. Grand Baie sits in the sheltered north west, away from the south east trade winds and on the dry side of the central plateau, so it gets more sun and less rain than a national forecast suggests. Summer runs November to April, winter May to October.
April and October. Both give warm sea temperatures, low rainfall, comfortable humidity and a town that is lively without being full. May, June and September are the best value months and the weather in all three is dry and bright.
Less than most of the island. The heaviest rain falls on the central plateau, which sits between the trade winds and the north west coast. Grand Baie weather in the wet months is usually short heavy afternoon showers rather than all day rain, and often nothing at all on days when the plateau is soaked.
Between about 23.7 degrees in September and 28.3 degrees in March. Both are swimmable. The water is warmest from January to April and coolest from August to October.
Much less than the east coast. The south east trade winds that make Belle Mare and the eastern lagoons choppy from June to September are blocked by the width of the island by the time they reach the north west. The bay itself faces north and stays flat.
July and August, with air temperatures around 19 to 23 degrees and nights near eighteen. That is jumper after dark rather than cold, and the days are dry, bright and comfortable for walking and sightseeing.
Not automatically. The season runs November to April and peaks in January and February, but most systems pass well clear of the island and Grand Baie is no more exposed than anywhere else. Take insurance covering weather disruption and follow the official warnings.
