Trip Details

Full Description

The Mauritius South Tour is a full day drive through the highlands and the wild southern interior of the island. While the north is known for beach resorts and nightlife, the south is defined by reservoirs, forest, gorges and waterfalls, with very little development in between. You travel with your own licensed driver in a private air conditioned vehicle, and the car belongs to your group alone. There is no fixed group to keep pace with and no other passengers to collect along the way, so the south tour runs at your speed. Hotel pickup is at 09:00 from anywhere in Mauritius and you are usually back by around 17:00.

The Mauritius South Tour climbs first onto the central plateau to Mare aux Vacoas, the largest reservoir on the island, sitting at around 600 metres and ringed by pine forest and highland mist. It is a genuinely different climate from the coast you left an hour earlier. Beside the water is Sophie Nature Walk, a quiet forest trail run by the Forestry Service, with shaded paths planted with rare native and endemic species and the only forest museum in Mauritius. Entry is free and the loop is easy and well signed, so it suits all ages and walking abilities.

From the plateau the south tour continues into Black River Gorges National Park, the largest protected rainforest in Mauritius. The main viewpoint opens onto the full sweep of the gorge, with the forest falling away toward the southern coast and rare endemic birds in the canopy below. A short distance on is Alexandra Falls, where the water drops roughly 100 metres through dense green forest to a viewing platform looking out over the southern plain. Both stops sit at altitude, so mornings can be cool here and cloud occasionally rolls through the viewpoints.

The afternoon of the Mauritius South Tour is given to Vallé Advenature Park, formerly La Vallée des Couleurs, a 450 acre nature park in the south. Its best known feature is the 23-Coloured Earth, volcanic soil settled into distinct shades of red, brown, purple and blue that never mix despite rain and wind. The park also holds waterfalls, forest trails and free roaming giant tortoises and deer. Lunch is a Mauritian thali eaten at the park, a platter of rice served with several curries, chutneys and pickles alongside.

Transport on the Mauritius South Tour is priced per vehicle rather than per person, so a couple and a family of seven pay the same fixed rate for the car. A sedan or SUV carries up to four passengers, a minivan up to seven and a minibus up to fourteen. The add-on at €25 per adult and €20 per child aged 3 to 11 covers park entry and the thali lunch together, with infants under 3 free. Every other stop on this south tour is free to enter. Ziplining, quad and buggy rides, luge karts and the Nepalese bridge are extra and paid on site, so bring cash..
