Île aux Bénitiers is an uninhabited coral island 500 metres off the coast of La Gaulette, on the south west side of Mauritius. It sits inside a shallow turquoise lagoon directly beneath Le Morne Brabant, the UNESCO World Heritage mountain, and it can only be reached by boat. This full day trip pairs a dawn dolphin swim at Tamarin Bay with several hours at Île aux Bénitiers itself. You travel from your hotel in a private air conditioned vehicle with your own licensed driver, so there is no shared shuttle and no waiting around for other passengers to be collected.
The day starts early, with hotel pickup around 06:00, because the sea on the way to Île aux Bénitiers is calmest shortly after sunrise and the dolphins are at their most active. Pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins gather off Tamarin to rest after feeding through the night. You enter the water in small groups with a guide. These are wild, free swimming animals in open water, so sightings are very likely but cannot be guaranteed, and every encounter is different. Afterwards the boat turns south and cruises down the west coast toward the lagoon.
The route to Île aux Bénitiers stops first at Crystal Rock, a coral formation rising from the middle of the lagoon and one of the most photographed spots in Mauritius. Snorkelling equipment and life jackets are provided for the reef stop, where the water is clear and shallow enough to see the bottom throughout. Landing on Île aux Bénitiers comes at around 10:30, and this is the part of the day most guests remember. The lagoon around Île aux Bénitiers is sheltered and warm, which makes it well suited to families and to weaker swimmers.
Lunch is a full barbecue cooked and served on the beach at Île aux Bénitiers, with unlimited beverages throughout the day and vegetarian options available on request when you book. There is time afterwards to swim, walk the sand or sit in the shade looking back at Le Morne. Transport to Île aux Bénitiers is priced per vehicle rather than per person, so a couple and a family of seven pay the same fixed rate for the car. A sedan or SUV carries up to four passengers, a minivan up to seven and a minibus up to fourteen.
