The Tea Route excursion at Bois Chéri is a full day journey through the cultural and natural centre of Mauritius, built around the oldest and largest tea estate on the island. Bois Chéri tea is one of the most recognisable Mauritian products, grown in the cool southern highlands where the climate suits it. You travel in a private air conditioned vehicle with your own licensed driver, and the car belongs to your group alone. There is no shared minibus and no fixed group to keep pace with, so the Tea Route runs at your speed rather than to someone else’s timetable.
The day climbs from the coast into the central highlands. It starts at Trou aux Cerfs, the dormant volcanic crater above Curepipe, which gives a 360 degree view across the island on a clear morning. The Tea Route then continues to Mare aux Vacoas, the largest reservoir in Mauritius, sitting at around 600 metres and ringed by pine forest and highland mist. Beside the water is Sophie Nature Walk, a short shaded loop through forest planted with rare native and endemic species. Around thirty minutes is enough to walk it comfortably.
Grand Bassin follows at midday, and it is the cultural anchor of the Tea Route. Also known as Ganga Talao, it is a crater lake held to be the most sacred Hindu site in Mauritius, drawing pilgrims from across the island and enormous crowds during Maha Shivaratri. Towering statues stand at the entrance. Visitors of all backgrounds are welcome to walk around the lake, and modest dress with shoulders and knees covered is appreciated. It is a working place of worship rather than a monument, which is a large part of why it is worth the stop.

A sedan or SUV carries up to four passengers, a minivan up to seven and a minibus up to fourteen.
