SSR Botanical Garden is the oldest botanical garden in the southern hemisphere. This beautiful botanical garden stretches over 37 hectares (it has been expanded since its inception) and holds a wealth of fascinating flora and fauna. Over time the botanical garden in Mauritius went through a series of names changes until finally, in 1988 it was renamed from ‘The Royal Botanic Gardens, Pamplemousses’ to ‘Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden’, after the first prime minister of Mauritius, who played an enormous role in the independence of Mauritius.

Beau Plan

The setting for this gem of a museum is an old factory, itself evoking bygone days and a symbol of all that sugar represents. It lies within the beautiful Beau Plan Sugar Estate, located close to the famous Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens. Pamplemousses is one of the oldest villages in the island, where Governor La Bourdonnais built his mansion and where Pierre Poivre began the Gardens, close to the beautiful church where Bernardin de Saint-Pierre chose to lay to rest Paul and Virginie. The village is a good place for a stroll, with scenes of a tranquil way of everyday life tucked away around many a corner.

Le Caudan Waterfront is a commercial development in the capital city. It includes shops, food courts, banking facilities, cinemas, casino and a business park.

Fort Adelaide :

Port Louis

Named after Queen Adelaide, the fort was built between 1834 and 1840, under the direction of William IV. It is believed that the Brits built this fort in fear of a civil war from remaining French settlers on the island. From a strategic point of view, the fort guarded the harbour against enemy attacks and fires that broke in the city. Pets are not permitted inside Citadel Fort to preserve the sanctity of the national heritage site.
