Arriving in Mauritius

All international flights arrive at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) International Airport, located in the southeast of the island near the town of Mahebourg. The airport is modern and well-equipped with currency exchange counters, ATMs, SIM card vendors and duty-free shops. Immigration and baggage reclaim are generally efficient, and most visitors are processed within 30-45 minutes of landing. Taxis Mauritius provides private airport transfers from SSR Airport to any hotel or accommodation on the island. Our driver will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with a name sign.

Currency and Payments

The local currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR). Most hotels, restaurants and larger shops accept major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard). ATMs are widely available in towns and shopping centres. We recommend carrying some cash in Rupees for smaller purchases, local markets and street vendors. Our drivers accept payment in EUR, USD or MUR for your convenience. Currency exchange is available at the airport, banks and licensed exchange bureaux across the island.

Climate and What to Pack

Mauritius enjoys a warm tropical climate throughout the year. Summer (November to April) brings higher temperatures of 25-33 degrees Celsius with occasional rain showers. Winter (May to October) is cooler and drier with temperatures between 17-25 degrees Celsius. We recommend packing light, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes for tours, sunscreen with high SPF, a hat and sunglasses. A light jacket or cardigan is useful for cooler winter evenings and air-conditioned spaces.

Language

English is the official language of Mauritius and is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants and tourist areas. French is also commonly used, and Mauritian Creole (Kreol) is the everyday language spoken by locals. Our Taxis Mauritius drivers are fluent in both English and French and happy to share local knowledge and recommendations during your journey.

Getting Around the Island

Mauritius is a compact island with the east to west coast spanning approximately 45 km (about 1 hour 15 minutes by car) and north to south approximately 61 km (about 1 hour 20 minutes). Driving is on the left side of the road. The easiest and most comfortable way to explore the island is with a private driver through a service like Taxis Mauritius. Public buses are available but can be slow and crowded, particularly during peak hours. Ride-hailing apps are limited on the island.

Safety Tips

Mauritius is generally a safe destination for tourists. We recommend the usual travel precautions: keep valuables secure, use hotel safes for passports and large amounts of cash, and be aware of your surroundings in crowded areas. The sea around Mauritius can have strong currents outside the reef, so always swim in designated areas. If you plan to hike, stick to marked trails and carry water. The emergency number in Mauritius is 999 for police, 114 for ambulance and 115 for fire services.
